Youth Group

May 2017

Happy May Everyone!

This last month we had a very successful breakfast fundraiser! It was not your ordinary breakfast as we served Loco Moco which is an island comfort food.

We also experienced a taste of our Coffee Shop & Music Lounge.  “V” (William) did a fantastic job singing a variety of music genres and playing the guitar.  Paul was our barista – the specialty coffees were a big hit!  We are so lucky and blessed to have such a talented staff.

As always our youth helped with setup, cooking, serving and clean-up. Without them, all we do would not be possible. A big THANK YOU to all the young men in our youth group who helped!

Last but not least, a big thanks to my father, Jessie who fried all the eggs on Sunday morning.  I estimated he flipped over 75 eggs.  He enjoyed himself and I am grateful for his generosity.  I attribute many of my cooking skills to dear ol’ Dad.

Sadly, I had to cancel the Mother’s Day Painting Project.  Unfortunately, I had a bout of bronchitis.  We will reschedule soon.

Please save the DATES:

Friday, May 19th – Bethany’s Annual Stanford Baseball Family Night – Come & enjoy a tailgate party,
baseball game and fireworks! Cost is only $20.00 for your reserved seats and hosted tailgate party.

April 2017

Last weekend we took our high school students to the District Youth Gathering and had a blast. We started off the first night with games, snacks, and our very own Lighthouse band lead the gathering in songs and praise. It was such a great atmosphere for our high school students to interact with other youth. The theme was "Rooted" and we learned throughout the weekend how God uses plants to show us how He nurtures and loves us regardless of our circumstances or situation.

We joined up the next morning with other youth groups to perform a service project where we moved tons of mulch in wheel barrels to fill up a park. You would have been proud of our youth as they lead the charge by transporting over a combined total of 180 wheel barrels full of mulch—while displaying joy and having fun as they worked hard.

Many thanks to those who made this trip possible!

Thanks Paul for writing up the article for the High School DYG :)

March 2017

Happy March Everyone

I hope that you all have stayed dry during these torrential episodes.  This month has definitely been a heavy rainfall. The weather did not stop us from having an adventure in San Francisco.  Our high school youth played a round of mini golf at the Urban Putt. It is an indoor mini golf course that is eclectic, very interactive, and reflective of San Francisco’s landscape and charm.  Definitely a place to check out.

The sun came out and we were able to walk around the Mission District and taste the diversity of the city.  We enjoyed Gelato and a variety of sweet and savory steamed buns. A delicious experience!

Please mark your calendar:

1.    Saturday, March 18, “Luck of the Irish” Game night. There will be a canvas painting event for all of our youth in April towards the end of the month.  Details to follow soon (paint a personal gift for Mother's Day.

February 2017

2017 is here and it came in strong with some very wet weather... which also brought in snow!

Our Junior and High School Youths were able to enjoy a wet, frosty, and fun weekend in Jackson, CA. We enjoyed a roaring fire, played board games, and had the highly anticipated poker night. Pastor Jon does a great job explaining the rules and the do’s and don’ts of poker. Monopoly was also a big game. Frankie was the winner in Monopoly, though I suspect some collusion was going on. AJ was the big winner in poker, Toa in second place, and Clara in third. Saturday, we enjoyed driving up HWY 88 to the snow line.  It did not take long before chains were required and the snowflakes were upon us.  A little sledding, lots of snowball fighting, and good times were had by all. The weekend was extremely successful with a lot of bonding, fellowship, and lots of laughter

A big thank you to BJ Flynn for sharing his home in Jackson and affording us this wonderful weekend with our youth!

Some upcoming events to keep in mind:

·         February  – Junior & High School Youth Groups game day at Bethany – Date TBD

·         March 24, 25, 26 – High School District Youth Gathering in Roseville

·         May 19 – Annual Stanford Baseball & Fireworks Tailgate Event

January 2017

Happy New Year everyone! Our youth group ended the year with an exciting and fun movie night. There were 10 in attendance to see Rogue One (I recommend taking a trip to the theatre to see it if you haven't already!). Not only did the movie live up to the Star Wars legacy, but it also incorporated love, loyalty, and sacrifices for the greater good... we had lots to talk about and reflect on after the movie.

Save the date for the weekend of January 15th. We are hoping to take our youth on a getaway snow weekend. More details to follow.

The past year has been filled with many experiences such as fundraisers, the National Youth Gathering, playing tourists in San Francisco, Minute-to-Win-It game night, laser tag, etc. It has been a privilege to be a part of the friendships that have developed this past year, and the continued fellowship of our youth.

May 2017 bless you with good health, happiness, peace, and the joy of Jesus.

December 2016

Merry Christmas 🎄

This year’s Bethany Youth Group's annual Gingerbread House Decorating Fundraiser was held on Saturday, December 3rd. It was our eighth year of sharing this wonderful, interactive experience with our community and Bethany family members.  There were delicious treats to eat, Christmas music, and a whole lot fun! It was so special to see our repeat families along with those who decided to start a new holiday tradition this year.

I want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of you who had helped with all of the preparations that were needed to put this event together. This certainly would not have been as successful without all of your help, love, and support.  You are greatly appreciated.

You can check out our Gingerbread House scrapbook at

I hope all of your Christmas wishes are fulfilled and you that have a safe and peaceful New Year!

I’m looking forward to new and exciting events in 2017.

November 2016

I hope everyone enjoyed a plentiful and Happy Halloween!

We had a wonderful youth event last month in San Francisco with 15 youth and young people in attendance. The Lord blessed us with good weather during our visit to the Wharf, Pier 39, and the Wax Museum.  We just missed a torrential down pour after we left the city. It was a great day of interesting people watching and good fun.

I experienced a proud moment when one of our young people saw a less fortunate individual and quickly shared his lunch bag with them. I love being reminded of how thoughtful and giving our youth and young people are. They make us proud!

Please mark your calendars for our annual Christmas Gingerbread House Fundraiser on Saturday, December 3rd.

September 2016

It is again the beginning of a new school year! We will be having our first youth group activity - Dinner and Game Night, on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 PM in the Family Center. Bring your appetite and skills. We have some fun and new activities coming up in the new year 2016-2017.

A huge thank you to our youth who did an outstanding job helping serve at the 90's Birthday Celebration. I am always impressed at how giving, thoughtful and attentive they are. Our youth are such a big part of making these events enjoyable and successful. I am so proud to know these young people and have them be a part of our Bethany family.

August 2016

This July, we took 10 of Bethany and Tongan Youth to New Orleans for the 2016 LCMS National Youth Gathering. Our trip began with a free day and for most of the youth, this was their first time to New Orleans (NOLA). So we decided to take a Swamp Tour to get an idea of its history and culture. We got on a boat and were able to see and feed wild alligators in their natural habitat—most of us even got to hold a young alligator! This fun and adventurous day set the tone for the rest of the trip.

There is nothing quite like 25,000 Christian youth gathering in one location to be 'In Christ Alone.' It is always such a joy to watch our youth, along with the 25,000 others, unite in God's word and worship. Our youth enjoyed the fellowship of attending the daily morning Bible studies and speaker sessions that were relevant to so many of them. Another big hit with our group was the Experiential Area. This area was hands-on and had a lot of fun and purposeful activities. One activity that stood out most to me was "LeadaChild/Walk for Water." Participants carried buckets of water in a simulated environment mimicking conditions in Africa. There were heat lamps to mimic the temperature, and obstacle courses to mimic the terrain. This allowed us to engage in an interactive experience, bringing focus and awareness to real global issues related to clean water, shoes, and education. There were also activities like putting together food baskets, making a prayer blanket and friendship bracelets.

Our youth was privileged enough to get to unite in service at an offsite servant event. We, along with a few other groups, went to a lower income school to paint, clean up, and beautify the campus for the upcoming school year. The youth worked very hard and felt extremely accomplished and gratified to be able to help make a difference.

We explored the concepts of identity, humility, and community in Christ Alone (the 2016 Gathering theme). It allowed us to celebrate and grow more deeply in our understanding of what Christ has done for us and how He continues to care for us. This trip not only strengthened our relationship with Christ, but also with each other.

Thank you so much to all those who continue to love and support our Youth Groups. We look forward to more community and Christ building events and activities.

June - July 2016

We had a very successful Stanford Family Baseball – Fireworks Night.  Foremost, it was a very proud and special moment for all of us to see one of our very own youth, Mia Hamilton, sing the National Anthem with her choir. The weather was perfect for our annual tailgate, and we were happy to see new faces as well as the regular attendee's! It was a great game with Stanford taking the win. And kudos to Stanford for an exceptional fireworks display - it was one of the best ones yet! This is always a fun event to kickoff the Summer Season.

A big thank you to all of you who attended and supported our combined Youth Fundraiser Luau!  It was well attended and everyone had a great time. Everyone’s love and support made this event exceptional - the outcome exceeded our expectations. It was evident our Tongan Youth poured their hearts and souls into their cultural dances. All of our male youth attending the 2016 National Youth Gathering (NYG) volunteered four hours of physical labor as one of many auction items in yesterday’s auction. It was a great event and pictures of the Luau festivities will be online soon!

All of the proceeds are going towards the 2016 NYG in New Orleans.  There are four adult leaders and 10 youth attending this tri-annual event.  We are only several weeks away before we depart for New Orleans!

Please continue to keep us in prayer as we get ready to take this wonderful and exciting journey!

Upcoming Events:

  • June 24-27 - Junior High School Youth Gathering at Mt. Cross in the Santa Cruz Mountains
  • July 14-21 – National Youth Gathering in New Orleans

Congratulations to all of our youth who are entering high school and to those entering college.  It is an exciting time as you all enter a new chapter in life.

Enjoy your summer and don’t forget to use sunscreen!

Be safe
– Blessings, Pilar

May 2016

The LCMS District Youth Block Party was a fantastic way to kick off the National Youth Gathering that will be held in New Orleans. Even though the weather was not kind on the ride up to Rocklin (due to well needed rain), the skies cleared up as we arrived for a wonderful and fun-filled day.

A gigantic “Thank You” to ALL of our youth who made Bethany’s 4th Annual Missions Dinner a success. I am so proud of our young people for sharing not only their experiences, but also what being part of a growing multicultural youth group has meant to them.

It is a privilege to be walking along side young people who have servant hearts. The wonderful feedback from many of you will surely be expressed to each and every one who participated and helped with the Missions Dinner.

My sincerest thanks to all of you who support and pray for our youth groups! We are growing and making a difference not only in our community but in our own personal lives as well.

March 2016

We had a wonderful turn out for our Valentine’s Card making party.  Our youth made over 50 hand decorated cards.  They were given to a variety of members, friends, and family members.  It is our goal next year to make a card for each of you.

I am not sure if our youth understand just how special their kind words and effort impact our recipients. I would like to share a story.  A few days before Valentine’s Day, a friend of mine who lives on the East Coast had recently put down her dog, Rocket, after he became ill. Rocket had been family for 12 wonderful years. My friend was very sad and had not told anyone about her loss. On Valentines, she was especially sad and missing her dog. One of our cards arrived and she was very touched – by the Scripture verse written inside, colorful signatures, and thoughtfulness. As she lives on the East Coast now, none of our youth were known to her – but their card still lifted her spirits and gave her comfort.  I am very proud of all of our youth who make an effort to come and be a part of something bigger than ourselves.

An extra special thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Breakfast Fundraiser for the upcoming 2016 NYG in New Orleans.  We had a great time preparing and serving you!

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, March 19 – We will be meeting at Bethany at 9:00 AM to help with the Easter Baskets & leave immediately after for a fun-filled day in San Francisco. We are providing a brown bag lunch and praying for good weather.  We need the rain, but clear skies would be nice.  Keep us in prayer for safe travels on this full day excursion.

Peace, love, and joy!
Blessings – Pilar

February 2016

I spoke briefly in the January Heart Matters about our Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Fundraiser but just wanted to give another BIG thank you to all of our families and friends who supported the event. It was so successful, not just because we met our goal of selling 60 houses, but also, because we had such a large youth turn out to run this event.  I had the honor and pleasure to observe self-directed leadership, team work, and lots of love poured out from our youth as they worked with each other and assisted the children with the decorations.  It was a wonderful day!

We originally had not planned on a Youth event in January. However, with lots of interest from the youth, we decided to have Dinner & Movie Night last Friday (1/29). We got comfy in the Sanctuary with blankets and pillows, had buttered popcorn and other treats, and enjoyed each other’s company and spiritual reflection.

Upcoming Youth Breakfast Fundraisers:

  • February 28, Sunday after service. Come and enjoy a variety of French Toast, Eggs, and Juice
  • April 24, Sunday after service. Menu to be determined.

Look forward to seeing you all soon.  As always, friends of our youth are welcomed (and encouraged!).

Blessings, Pilar

December 2015

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We had an awesome time at our BBQ & Game Night with our Middle School, High School, and Tongan Youth last month. We played a variety of “Minute to Win It” games, which certainly brought out the competitive spirit in everyone. It was such a fun night – there were many requests to have another game night. We will definitely do again!

December 5 is our 7th Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Event.  This has become a wonderful holiday tradition for the families who participate and the youth who help with the event. Our youth really seem to enjoy working with all the families and children who support this event.

The youth have worked really hard at making commitments to attend all of our events and are extremely excited about the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. If it were not for all of your support and encouragement for Bethany’s Youth Program, we would not be able to have as many wonderful monthly events for our youth. Please continue your prayers, support, and guidance for our youth and leadership in the upcoming New Year.

There are no events scheduled for January, as many of our youth are away for the holidays. After the New Year, we will be scheduling a delicious breakfast fundraiser and a Luau!

Be safe this holiday season.

Blessings, Pilar

June 2015

A big thank you to all of our youth, families, and friends who attended Bethany’s Annual Stanford Baseball Family Night. We had a total of 49 attendees! It was an unusual cold and windy afternoon, but we still BBQ’d and enjoyed the night. The fireworks were awesome! Everyone was a trooper for sticking it out to the end. This has been a wonderful annual event that was started by Ed Stinson.  I am honored that I can continue a tradition he started!  Thank you, Ed.

I am very grateful for Mark Muenchow’s assistance in transporting the tables & working the grills. Mark is somewhat of a celebrity, too.  NBC BayArea was interviewing alumni on the recent suspension of the Stanford Band, and they noticed our group.  Mark Muenchow & Bob Beckstrom made the local news that evening.

Save the date for July 18. The youth group will be hiking and learning some survival skills at Mt. Tamalpais in Marin.

See you at the game!

April 2015

Sometimes we forget that God is listening and answers our prayers. Our HS Youth experienced a God moment.  We went on a snow trip during the last weekend of February. As we know all too well, there has not been much rain, which means no snow. We prayed and asked for snow... and we got it! It could not have been a more beautiful, exciting, and special weekend.  We posted pictures to our facebook page and I would like to invite you all to like our page! I will be posting pictures from all of our events!

A BIG thank you to all of our youth for their incredible efforts at the 2015 Missions Dinner. We had youth from age 10 to age 24 helping prepare and serve dinner and they did an excellent job! I would also like to thank all of you for your support in helping bring a loving Christian relationship to our young people!

God Bless - Pilar

June 2014

We are excited to have six youth attending the 2014 CNH District Junior Youth Gathering at Mount Cross, Sunday, June 27 through Monday, June 30.

This year’s theme is “Plugged In” and is sure to be an interesting topic. The theme verse is John 15:5 – I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Please keep us in your prayers for safe travels as we make new connection with Christ and our peers.

June 2013

Our Youth will be leaving for the National Youth Gathering on Sunday June 30th, and returning home on Saturday, July 6th. This is one of the highlights for our Youth and is available only every three years.

Please remember to pray for our safe travel to San Antonio, for the witness of our Youth in San Antonio, for the growth of faith our Youth receive at the Gathering, for the adult leaders who guide our Youth, and for safe travel home.

I pray this Gathering will prove to be a blessing for all who hear the witness of young people who return to share the events and for the growth of faith they have over this week at the Gathering.

November 2011

By the time you are reading this, the youth will have met to carve pumpkins, preparing for Halloween. That evening, we will once again be handing out goodies at the corner of Cloud and Avy, where we see 300-400 children each year. If you would like to come help and/or hang out, we always enjoy the company. It is a wonderful way to meet people in our community and see all the children in costume.

In March we will be attending a San Jose Sharks game for the second year in a row. Thanks for Mark Muenchow for arranging the tickets. We will also be doing our Gingerbread House fundraiser for the 3rd year in a row. It is lots of work to prepare for the day, but the children have a wonderful time creating Gingerbread houses for Christmas.

October 2011

The Junior High (or is that Middle School?) youth met on Saturday, September 25th for an afternoon of food and fun. We made plans for some events in the future, ate a hearty meal prepared by Pilar and finished with some favorite games. The picture shows a tame first run of Zoom Ball without the Duck tape, but next time, we will be sure to have a roll, and some taped up participants.

April 2011

The initial idea was prompted by one member’s love of a sport many had never witnessed. Mark Muenchow recommended a Sharks game for the junior high group, which later encompassed the high school group, visitors, friends and families. Now, I had never been to a hockey game before, but I am sure it was a lot more fun with 30 people from Bethany than it would have been by myself! We had a good time, even though we could have used a boat to get out in the torrential downpour that evening.

While the hockey game may not be that newsworthy, the process is very newsworthy. One person decided to share his passion, worked on the logistics for the game, and helped us do an event we have never done before. We will probably go again, only this time we will open it up to families early in the process.

What do you like to do? Would you be willing to lead an event by getting the information and working with our staff? If you have an idea and want to do something with a larger group, we are here to help, but we do need people, even old hockey players, to say not only this could be fun, but here is how I will help!

Here's a quick look at our upcoming events!

April 2010

Last month we received some disappointing news. The Tongan youth group will not be able to attend the National Youth Gathering. A conference that was scheduled for Hawaii was moved to East Palo Alto and they have hosting responsibilities. We will still be taking 14 youth and adults to the gathering and hope to bring our new friends three years from now when this happens again.

During the next few months, the Senior High youth will continue to be focused on activities that will help fund the National LCMS Youth Gathering trip.  There will be a number of fundraising activities over the next few months, some of which are also opportunities to help others.  We also have events planned for the Junior High youth.   Take a look at what’s already on the calendar:

May 1 – 4 – Yard Sale

We will have a yard sale at Pilar’s house.  We are happy to accept any items now and hope to have a silent auction at church during the same weekend.  If you have items to donate for the yard sale, please call the office.

God willing, we will be at the National LCMS Youth Gathering in New Orleans, LA in mid July.  Please pray for our efforts to bring this large group.
